"Steel Magnolias" Opens Friday, May 9th

Published on: May 4, 2025

Winder-Barrow Community Theatre opens its production of Steel Magnolias on Friday, May 9th at 7:30 pm. The show is produced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service and will have additional performances on Friday the 16th (7:30 pm), Saturdays (7:30 pm) and Sundays (3:00 pm) through May 18th.

Last performed by Winder-Barrow Community Theatre in 2012, this show is set in Truvy's Beauty Salon where you will see the bonds of friendship through happy, silly, frightening and sad life experiences. The outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy (played by Cindy Davis) is helped by her new assistant Annelle (Megan Johnston). Truvy dispenses shampoo and free advice to the rich curmudgeon Ouiser (Elinor Hasty), the eccentric millionaire with a sweet tooth Miss Clairee (Candace Stoffel), and the local social leader M'Lynn (Amy Howard) - whose daughter Shelby (Lauren Funderburke) is about to marry a "good ol' boy". Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play moves toward tragedy when, in the second act, the spunky Shelby (who is a diabetic) risks pregnancy and forfeits her life. The sudden realization of their mortality affects the others, but also draws on the underlying strength—and love—which give the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.

Winder-Barrow Community Theatre’s production of Steel Magnolias is directed by Dana Harrell and produced by David Sullivan. Tickets at the door are $22 for adults and $20 for senior citizens, teachers, students and veterans. They can be purchased at the door or online by visiting www.winderbarrowtheatre.org.
